Many of us have to contemplate the difficult decision of having a beloved pet put to sleep. The act of putting an animal to sleep, also known as euthanasia will vary dependant on your pets’ condition and temperament. Generally it is in the form of an overdose of an anaesthetic, which is injected into a vein in their foreleg. The injection is then transported to all of the vital organs and generally acts incredibly quickly. The decision and subsequent loss of a pet can be a very difficult time for all of the family. Pets quickly become members of the family and understandably their absence can be a difficult thing to adjust and cope with. Please give yourself time to grieve and remember your pet in whichever way helps - talking, writing, looking at photos. Some people find in time that they want to get another pet but don't rush into this as you need time to come to terms with your loss otherwise it may be something you regret doing too quickly. All of our staff are appreciative of how difficult this time may be for you, so please contact the surgery and speak to a member of our team. You may find this easier to discuss sometime before you make your decision or after if you or your family are finding it difficult to cope. You may if you wish have your pet’s ashes individually cremated so that they may be returned to you and your family. We work closely with a company called Dignity who are based in Hartley Wintney.
